Intonation and Accent Module
This module can be used
To visualize and practice intonation or accent or stress pattern of a spoken utterance
By those whose voice sounds monotonous or sleepy
By hard of hearing clients to make them realize that they can speak in a lively voice
The module is organized as follows
-
General awareness on ‘What is intonation?’ and ‘What is accent?’
See 'Learn More >> Voice or Spoken Language >> General Awareness'
Therapy Practice
Within each option, a 'Help' document can be opened to learn on how to use that option.
Each therapy option can be run on built-in demo sample files to understand the functionality of that option.
- Intonation Practice
As the client (i) speaks an utterance or (ii) says a vowel with a steady pitch or (iii) says a vowel with a gliding pitch or (iv) sing a piece of music, a graph of the pitch (F0) versus time is shown in real-time.
For a monotonous or sleepy voice, the representation is relatively flat with not many ups and downs.
A model intonation graph can be saved in the upper window as a reference for comparison and correction. The intonation pattern of the client’s utterance is shown in the lower window. The duration of the window can be set based on the length of the utterance to be practiced.
The following graphical representations are available in this module:
- Pitch versus time, along with the histogram of pitch.
- Intensity or volume in dB versus time along with the histogram of intensity.
- Both pitch and intensity versus time along with 'Intensity Vs Pitch' graph.
- Accent Practice
This is similar to the "Intonation Practice" option above. Here, a model accent is obtained from a pre-stored audio file and the intonation pattern is displayed in the upper window. The user's production is shown in the lower window.
This is meant especially for learning second language (L-II) such as English, especially the stress pattern.
